Join the Alumni Choir
The Gala Organizing Committee invites interested and qualified alumni to join the Centennial Reunion Alumni Choir.
The Choir will perform on stage as part of the Saturday evening Gala entertainment. Repertoire will include Broadway show tunes, selections from Gilbert & Sullivan and the school song "Jerusalem".
Richard Yaffe will conduct the choir at the final rehearsals and on stage. The rehearsal director will be Rick Hemmerling. Singers will not be auditioned but are expected to read music and have experience in singing 4-part (SATB) arrangements. Rehearsals will be held at St. John's High on Wednesdays beginning March 24. Attendance at rehearsals is required for participation.
Richard Yaffe, a 1973 St. John's graduate, is an accomplished vocalist and choral director. He conducted a local synagogue choir for over 20 years, was the choral director at the opening of the Asper Jewish Community Campus and for the I.L. Peretz Folk School 90th Reunion, and is the artistic director of the Winnipeg Jewish Community Choral Group Neshomah (Soul).
Active in musical theatre, Richard has appeared at Rainbow Stage and in several Manitoba Theatre Centre/Manitoba Bar Association productions. He was a featured entertainer at the 2009 Mameloshen Festival of Yiddish Entertainment and Culture accompanied by the Ron Paley Trio, and will be doing a return engagement this year. Richard is a securities law partner with the law firm Aikins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson LLP.

Retired Teachers Tea
May 7, 2009 was an unseasonably cold evening but the Senior Gym at St. John's High School was brimming with smiles, warmth, sweets and "the brew that refreshes." Amid walls sprouting tiger lilies, tigers and tables festive with orange daisies, nostalgia reigned supreme.

Supporting One Million Pennies
St. John's staff and students are collecting 1,000,000 Pennies in time for the 2010 centennial of St. John's High School! One Million Pennies is a fundraiser for Cancer Care in memory of Randy Engstrom, a long time Industrial Arts teacher and Steve Slack, a Special Education Educational Assistant.
Donations will be collected at all alumni meetings and events, or can be dropped off at the school. Containers to collect pennies can also be delivered to your business. If you are interested in donating, please contact the school at 589-4374.
Ribbon cutting ceremony and press release
A ribbon cutting ceremony and media event was held on June 22nd, 2008 to mark the official opening of the Centennial Wall.
General meetings are held every two to three months; however, the Executive committee meets more regularly with committee chairs. If you would like more information about St. John's Alumni 2010, becoming a year/decade captain, or would like to volunteer, contact Carole.
