A Message From the Premier.
On behalf of the Province of Manitoba, it is my pleasure to extend greetings and congratulations to all students, staff and alumni celebrating the 100th Anniversary of St. John's High School.
Schools are forums for young people to develop their academic and social skills, make lifelong friends, discover their scholastic interests, and begin to explore who they are and where they belong in the world. For 100 years, St. John's High School has provided a unique and enriching experience for students. This exceptional institute has grown in size, scope and opportunity since it opened its doors and has become an integral part of the neighbourhood. As our province has grown and changed over time, St. John's High School has remained an organization that is focused on the success of its students. Its reputation for excellence is exemplified by the continued adaptation of its programming and services to suit the needs of its learners and through the success and support of its alumni. The strong values and colourful history of this school have made significant contributions to our privince and its citizens, and we are so proud of our 'Tigers', past and present.
May this reunion serve as an opportunity to pay tribute to St. John's and its educators, who have enriched the lives of students for 100 years. Wonderful memories still echo in the halls of St. John's High School.
Congratulations on reaching this important and significant milestone.

Poet and author Ron Romanowski will recite.

Ron Romanowski will be reciting a couple of his poems at the opening ceremony
Ron Romanowski attended St. John's High from 1966 to 1972. At the University of Winnipeg he studied history, and labour studies at the University of Manitoba. After taking creative writing courses at the U of W he reconnected with his Tiger heart, and his first literary work was published.
Since then, among other projects, he has completed three books of poetry including Sweet Talking (2004) and The Great Buffalo Republic (2007).
His latest book, Insurrection (2009), is a poetic commemoration of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. Ron's work is a synthesis of personal mythology, political themes and everyday occurrence set in unique lyrical structures.
Insurrection is available at McNally Robinson Booksellers (www.mcnallyrobinson.com) and the Mondragon Bookstore and Coffeehouse (946-5241).

MLA for St John's reads statement at Manitoba Legislature
On April 15, 2010, Hon. Gord Mackintosh, MLA for the constituency of St. John's read this statement announcing the 100th anniversary of St. John's High School:
Mr. Speaker, it is with great pleasure that I rise today to share with all Members of the House an important announcement. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the oldest high school in Winnipeg, St. John's High.
Originally known as St. John's Technical High School, the first classes were temporarily held in 1910 at Luxton School with only 98 students and four teachers, while construction was completed in 1912 on its own facility at Church and Salter.
Numerous graduates have left remarkable footprints in the history of St. John's High School and Winnipeg's North End. The Honour Rolls dedicated to the several hundred alumni who gave their lives in World War I and II still stand. Many St. John's graduates who entered into culture, politics, arts and entertainment, sports, writing and community service have become famous nationally and internationally. Fourteen recipients of the Order of Canada attended St. John's High. The unique blend of graduates is part of the enduring character that makes St. John's an icon in our city.
Currently, St. John's High has over 1,100 students enrolled in grades seven through 12, and 76 teaching staff. The school offers numerous programs and services, including a Teen Health Clinic, homework clubs, a breakfast and lunch program, a School Resource Officer, and community liaison services. Its 30-some sports teams rally to the cheer of "Go Tigers go!" at numerous events. Tiger Pride has spread from the school and into the surrounding community.
I would like to acknowledge those in attendance today from St. John's High, the reunion chairs Brian Burdy and Carole Kurdydyk and their committee along with Principal Linda Bulka and Vice Principals Dennis Mogg and Cathy Sharrow. I wish them much success in planning the festivities to celebrate the reunion this June 17th through 20th. I am looking forward to attending the reunion's gala dinner at the Convention Centre on the Saturday evening to chat with the many alumni spanning the decades of the school's history who will be there reconnecting with their classmates and friends from their high school days.

Bill and Gary invite all to the Reunion...

Poster twins Gary (1967-96) and Bill (1967-98) invite all of their former St. John's students, athletes and teaching colleagues to meet them at the school June 17 - 20, 2010.
WHSFL Hall of Fame induction to feature St. John's greats
St. John's is looking for football stars.
The St. John's Tigers are one of the original teams in the WHSFL (Winnipeg High School Football League) having taken part since the first season in 1933.
It is a team that has included names like Lou Adelman, Rube Ludwig, and CFL players like Dr. Norman Hill, Ted Milian and Chris Walby. There are many hundreds of former players out there that we want to hear from.
In June of 2010, the school will be celebrating 100 years in North Winnipeg, and the football team wants to do something special to honour its past.
During the reunion weekend (June 17-20) there will be a special WHSFL Hall of Fame induction to feature St. John's greats. We need the help of family and friends of former players to find candidates for admission to the Hall. If you have someone in mind, please email Brian Marks, head coach of the Tigers at bmarks@wsd1.org.
